The statistics are truly staggering:
- About 46% of men in England and 32% of women
are overweight with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25-30, and a further
17% of men and 21% of women are obese with a BMI of 30 or more (Click

- The percentage of adults who are obese has roughly
doubled since the mid-1980s
- Over 30,000 deaths a year are caused by obesity
in England alone
- It is estimated that obesity costs the NHS £500million
per year
- The number of obese children has tripled in 20years
- 10% of six year olds are obess rising to 17% of 15-year-olds
- Most people who lose weight on a calorie-controlled
diet put it on again
- Only 5% of obese people manage to keep their
weight down
- The diet foods market is worth over £1billion
annually
- As people get older the tendency to become overweight
increases - in Britain a staggering 77% of men and 71% of women are
overweight in the 64-75 age bracket
- In the United States two thirds of the population
is overweight and almost a third of Americans are obese
- Around 300,000 adults die each year in the United
States as a result of unheallthy eating habits and lack of exercise
- In the UK an estimated 1 in 11 deaths is attributed
to excess weight
